WHITSBURY, formerly in Wiltshire
Ekwall suggests this contains Old English 'wice'='wych elm', presumably yielding a hypothetical place name 'Wice(na)burh'='fort of the wych elm(s)'; but there is no convincing trace of the genitive plural. The 'burh' is obviously the hillfort now called 'Whitsbury Camp' or 'Castle Ditches'.
